
Since the beginning of his career, pianist Juan Lago has won numerous prizes in the main piano competitions in Spain. In addition, he has been awarded at the XXIII International Competition “Valessia-Musica” in Varallo, Italy; in the 20th Piano Competition “Cidade de Ferrol”, Spain; in the 9th International Piano Prize “A. Scriabin” in Grosseto, Italy; and in the VI International Competition “Composers of Spain” in Las Rozas in Madrid, Spain.
Juan Lago has played in Europe, America, Asia and the Middle East as a chamber musician and concert soloist with orchestras such as the Sicilian Symphony Orchestra (Italy), the “Mihail Jora” Philharmonic Orchestra of Bacau (Romania), the Çukurova State Symphony Orchestra (Turkey), and the Spanish orchestras Orquesta de la Comunidad de Madrid, Orquesta de Córdoba, Orquesta de Valencia and Orquesta Sinfónica de Málaga, under the baton of conductors such as Ovidiu Balan, Emin Guyasliven, José Ramón Encinar, Ernest Martínez Izquierdo, José Luis Martínez and Francisco de Gálvez, among others.
Lago has participated as an interpreter and has given master classes at the Washington International Piano Festival (Washington D.C., USA). As an enthusiastic chamber musician, Juan Lago has collaborated with violinists Vasco Vassilev, Alissa Margulis and Santiago Juan, violist Santiago Cantó, cellists Alexander Buzlov and Iván Balaguer, and pianist Belén Navarro.
He has presented lectures at the University of Aveiro (Portugal), at the Gulangyu Conservatory in Xiamen (China) and at the Latvian Academy of Music, in Riga (Latvia).
Juan Lago has been the founder and artistic director of the Campillos International Piano Competition since 2007, director of the Piano Department of the Valencia International Performance Academy and Festival (VIPA) and artistic director of the Malaga International Piano Festival (FIPMA).
He is often invited to serve on the jury in competitions such as Cantù (Italy), S. Rachmaninov (Moscow, Russia), James Mottram (Manchester, United Kingdom) or A. Scriabin (Grosseto, Italy).
Juan Lago has been a piano teacher at the “José Iturbi” Conservatory in Valencia, at the Talent Music Master Courses at the University of Brescia (Italy) and at the Qatar Music Academy. Its students have been awarded numerous awards in international and Spanish competitions.
Lago holds a Master's degree in Musical Interpretation and Research from the International Valencian University; an Artist Diploma from the Conservatory of Amsterdam, where he studied under the supervision of Professor Jan Wijn; a degree from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Madrid, where he studied with Professor Ana Guijarro, and a degree from the Conservatory of Malaga, where he studied with Professor Juan J. Peralta. He has also been influenced by pianists such as Gyorgy Sebok, Eugen Indjic, Stanislav Pochekin, Imre Rohmann and Claudio Martínez Mehner.
