Born in Varna, Bulgaria. He finished his studies at the Sofia State Conservatory as a student of the famous pianist and pedagogue Konstantin Stankovich.
He has been awarded prizes in competitions such as “Senigallia” (Italy), “F. Chopin” (Poland), in which he was the first Bulgarian pianist to enter the final selection of this important competition. In 1990 he won the First Prize in the “Palm Beach International” competition (USA) and in 1994 he was proclaimed the winner of the First Prize of the “World Piano Masters” competition in Monte Carlo.
He performs numerous concerts, achieving great successes in venues such as the Berlin Philharmonic, Musikverein in Vienna, Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, “La Scala” in Milan, Lincoln Center in New York, “Gaveau” and “Pleyel” in Paris, “Alte Oper” in Frankfurt, “Hercules” in Munich, KKL in Lucerne, Zurich Opera, Monte Carlo Opera, National Opera of Warsaw, Corum de Montpellier, Auditorio Nacional de Madrid, Auditorio de Barcelona, Palau de la Música in Valencia, Palau de la Música in Valencia, Palau de Monte Carlo, National Opera of Warsaw, Corum de Montpellier, Auditorio Nacional de Madrid, Auditorio de Barcelona, Palau de la Música in Valencia, Opera de Monte Carlo, National Opera of Warsaw, Corum de Montpellier, Auditorio Nacional de Madrid, Auditorio de Barcelona, Palau de la Música in Valencia, Opera de Monte Carlo, National Opera of Warsaw, Corum de Montpellier, Auditorio Nacional de Madrid, Auditorio de Barcelona, Palau de la Música in Lucerne, Santander, KBS Seoul Auditorium, “Tchaikovsky” Room of the Moscow Conservatory, Warsaw National Philharmonic, etc. He has performed with important orchestras, under the baton of famous conductors.
Recognized as one of the best interpreters of Chopin in the world, in 1999 he performed a cycle of 6 recitals in which he interpreted Chopin's complete work, in Madrid and other Spanish cities. He repeated this same cycle in 2010, at the Teatro Maestranza in Seville, at the Santander International Festival and at the Sofia Philharmonic Hall.
He participates in festivals such as “Newport Festival”, “La Roque d'Anthéron”, “Chopin and his Europe” in Warsaw, “Rarities of Piano Music” in Germany, “Emilia Romagna Festival” in Italy, Granada Festival, Santander Festival, Chopin Festival in Valldemossa, etc.
He has recorded records for the labels RCA, Gega New, Pentatone, Danacord, Non Profit Music, Hyperion, Toccata Classics, Virginia Records, Vela Records, ARIA Classics, as well as the own seal of the F. Chopin National Institute in Warsaw. One of his albums with works by Chopin has been awarded the Grand Prix du Disque Chopin by the F. Chopin National Institute in Warsaw. In 2016, the British label Hyperion performs the record premiere of Moritz Moszkowski's newly rediscovered Concerto Op. 3, with Angelov as solo artist, accompanied by the BBC Orchestra of Glasgow.
Ludmil Angelov is a corresponding academic at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and Historical Sciences of Toledo. In 2011 he received the GLORIA ARTIS medal from the Polish Ministry of Culture for his extraordinary contribution to Polish culture and at the end of 2023 he was awarded the Order of Isabella the Catholic by the Royal House of Spain. He teaches as an honorary professor at the New Bulgarian University in Sofia and master classes all over the world. He has been a member of the international jury of the Chopin Competition in Warsaw in its last three editions, in 2010, 2015 and 2021.
