Joan Enric Lluna combines his work as a clarinetist with conducting and teaching.
In his capacity as director and soloist-director, Lluna has led several European orchestras, such as the Manchester Camerata, the Luzerne Festival Strings, Covent Garden Chamber Orchestra, etc. In April 2019, he made his debut in the chamber of the Berlin Philharmonic and in the Karl Philip Emmanuel Bach hall in Frankfurt or at the head of the Berliner Camerata, which received a warm reception from the public.
As a solo artist, he has performed on the main European stages, under the direction of teachers such as Zubin Mehta, Gianandrea Noseda, Juanjo Mena and Neville Marriner, and together with chamber groups such as the Brodsky, Tokyo, Alexander, Diotima quartets, or soloists such as Lluís Claret, J. C. Garvayo, Tasmin Little and Josep Colom. His appearances at the City of London Festival, Festival Classique in The Hague, San Francisco (USA) Chamber Music series, Konzerthaus in Berlin or the Liceo de Cámara in Madrid have been of special relevance.
He is currently the solo clarinet of the CV Orchestra at the Palau de las Artes Reina Sofía, a position for which he was chosen by Lorin Maazel in 2006. He was also the first clarinet and co-founder of the Cadaqués Orchestra, the first clarinet of the Bournemouth Sinfonietta, and the first guest clarinet of orchestras such as the London Philharmonic, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe among many others.
Lluna is the driving force and director of the camera group Moonwinds, which he created in 2005. Since 2009, he has directed the International Festival “Chamber Music Residencies” in Godella, Valencia. In November 2020, Joan presented “Moowinds Simfònic”, a cross-cutting orchestral project born from the original group and with a pedagogical aspect that unites great international figures with young talents in order to unite artistic excellence and emerging talents.
Lluna has performed much of the solo clarinet repertoire and premiered concerts by composers such as Sir John Tavener, J. Guinjoan, César Cano, Jesús Torres, Mauricio Sotelo, Isidora Zebeljan, Paul Barker, Sánchez Verdú and H. Khoury, as well as numerous chamber works by composers such as Casablancas, Calandín, D. del Puerto, Blai Soler, Laura Vega, Voro García, A. Guinovart, D. Murcott, etc.
In the near future he will premiere concerts dedicated to him by Jorge Grundman and Miquel Ortega.
He has more than 25 recordings in his possession, including his three versions of Mozart's concert K622, with Sir Neville Marriner and the Cadaqués Orchestra (Tritó), with the English Chamber Orchestra and Antony Pay (Cala Classics) and with the Bournemouth Sinfonietta (Guild), the trio op 114 and quintet op 115 by Brahms with the Tokyo quartet, Lluís Claret and Josep Colom (Harmonía Mundi), and the concerts and symphonies of C. M. von Weber with the Berliner Camerata (IBS).
His interest in recovering music from Spanish and Valencian heritage has been reflected in recordings and in works of editing scores. He currently dedicates part of his time to the recovery of two unpublished ballets by Vicente Martín and Soler, which will soon be released in a critical edition with the Miotta & Molière publishing house. The music of these ballets was presented in May 2023 in the Castellón auditorium with the help of the IVC, and they will continue to be presented in the near future both in concert format and in ballet.
His recordings dedicated to the recovery of heritage include “Spanish Music in Exile” with J. C. Garvayo (Tritó), “Le jour de l'an” with Moonwinds (IBS), Rossini and Spain (Harmonía Mundi), “A Rare Thing”, Harmoniemusik by Martín and Soler (Harmonía Mundi), and “In Popular Style”, with Moonwinds (IBS).
More recently, with great critical success, other recording projects have been released: the one dedicated to maestro Joaquín Rodirgo conducting the CV Orchestra of the Palau de les Arts, the Concerts and Symphonies by C. M. von Weber with the Berliner Camerata, “Jazz Impact”, all of them for the IBS label, and “Benet Casablancas, the clarinet Music”, with Columna Música.
Two new recordings are due to be released to the market in the near future, both for Sony Classical: Brahms' Sonatas op. 120 with pianist Josu de Solaun, and the Music of two unreleased ballets by Martín and Soler conducting Moonwinds Simfònic. His recording of “Pipe & Flamingoes”, a concert dedicated to Joan by Isidora Zebeljan, which he recently recorded with the Belgrade Philharmonic and Paul Daniel, will also be released.
Joan is a professor at ESMUC in Barcelona, the Trinity College of Music in London, and is regularly invited to give master classes and recitals at important musical institutions, such as California State University, Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Royal College and Royal Academy in London or the Royal Scottish Academy of Music in Glasgow.
