Born in Avinyonet de Puigventós (Girona), he began studying violin at the age of eleven; at thirteen he won his first competition and at fourteen he made his solo debut in Barcelona with J. S. Bach's concerto in A minor, conducted by his teacher, great violinist and pedagogue Joan Massià. At the age of seventeen, he finished his career at the Conservatory Superior Municipal de Música de Barcelona with the highest grades, corroborated by the Extraordinary Prize for Violin and Chamber Music. At this same age, he won the first prize, unanimously, in the “Isidro Gyenes” Competition in Madrid. Soon after, he performed J. Brahms' Concert at the Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona, and that's when he began one of the most unique musical careers in our country, performing in the most important concert halls in Spain, Europe, America, Israel, etc. collaborating with important conductors and orchestras such as the Royal Philharmonic, New Philarmonia, Scottish Symphony, National Orchestra of France, Hamburg Symphony, National Orchestra of Spain, Menuhin Festival Orchestra, Israel Symphony Orchestra, Israel Chamber Orchestra, Orchestra of Israel, Orchestra of RTV Española, Orquesta Ciudad de Barcelona, etc.
In 1972, on the occasion of the Carl Flesh International Competition in London, he won the 1st Violin Prize and the Audience Award and came into contact with the great master Yehudi Menuhin performing J. S. Bach's Concerto for Two Violins at the London City Festival, thus beginning a collaboration and friendship maintained over the years and manifested in numerous concerts.
In 1973 he made his debut at the Royal Festival Hall performing the Romances for violin and orchestra by L. V. Beethoven, under the direction of Sir Charles Groves.
Comellas has also been awarded in other international competitions such as Jaques Thibaud in Paris, Viña de Mar in Chile and Reina Elisabeth in Brussels.
He often participates in the most important music festivals such as the City of London, the Prades Festival, the Gstaad Festival, the Autumn Festival in Madrid, the Barcelona Festival, in Torroella de Montgrí, in Cadaqués, in Santes Creus, in Perelada, etc., performing with such important artistic personalities as Yehudi Menuhin himself, Maurice Gendron, Jean Pierre Rampal, Victòria dels Àngels, Bruno Giurana, Eugene Istomin, etc. The trio he formed with Rosa was very celebrated. And Marçal Cervera, until an unfortunate accident mortally struck the life of the great pianist.
Now, in full artistic maturity, Comellas decided to expand his activity to orchestral conducting, a fact that he was the founder and director of some of the most significant orchestras in our country, such as the Catalan Chamber Orchestra, the Reina Sofía Orchestra, the Chamber Orchestra of the Palau de la Música Catalana and currently, the Gonçal Comellas Chamber Orchestra.
The pedagogical activity of Comellas is permanent in International Courses.
